Confession: I know almost fuck all about actually sewing but I’ve tried to learn a bunch of times before and I’m embarking on another go, so I’ve got some basic supplies and a little know how. I’d go with online sources myself, and if you really think you need a book, hit the library to see what they’ve got first. Haven’t read through this yet but it looks like it might be good.

Far as I can tell you need:

Pins (decent ones are better because they’re probably sharper and thinner and thus will damage your cloth less, I’ve bought cheapo pins and found them to be nothing more than frickin’ metal pegs.)

Needles, decent is better for the same reasons as above. I dunno if you’re hand sewing or machine sewing and I’m still leery of my machine so I’m not much help there. Get a thimble if you think you’ll stab yourself a lot. They also make needle threaders if you aren’t good at doing that.

Measuring Tape - Measuring is IMPORTANT WOW DO IT A LOT, nothing will cock up following a pattern quicker than not measuring it.

Good Scissors - just makes for cleaner, better edges, don’t be turrible and use it on paper, paper will dull them faster. There’s also rolling fabric cutters, but if you get that get a mat so it doesn’t cut into your floor/table/whatever’s under your fabric.

Decent thread - it’ll make your seams stronger. Hopefully matches or complements the fabric you’re using it with.

Chalk - or anything that will make a mark that you can wash off cloth. Alternatively, do all your markings on the ‘wrong’ side of the fabric.

Iron - I suck at this part, but I bought an iron just the other day because ironing a seam in place makes everything so much easier and neater.

Despite having briefly worked at a Jo-Ann’s, I don’t recall if they do starter kits. *n*; But this should be enough to get you started. If you want cheap cloth for small projects, hit the scrap bins and clearance sections. There’s a lot of small lengths of cloth they put on sale because when they were cutting fabric for a customer, and there was less than a yard left on the bolt. Muslin is probably the cheapest cloth you’ll find, like 99 cents a yard, and it is often used to draft patterns.

1. Get Rid of Distractions

This should be pretty obvious right? But actually, it’s not. We often get distracted without realizing that we already are. Once distracted, we engage in the new task and we don’t pay attention to what we were originally supposed to do.

Instead, to get rid of distractions, identify what distract you and then take proactive measures to not let them distract you again. For example, if it’s the internet, television or people, then you might want to consider studying at the library.

However, sometimes distractions can be thoughts that are intrusive. For instance, thoughts stemming from anxieties or worries. If this is the case, there is only so much you can do about them. You can try seeking professional help, dealing with the cause of anxiety or worries, or doing your best to distract yourself from those thoughts.

2. Avoid Procrastinating

Sometimes, we don’t begin on the task because we are already distracted. If this happens, put the distractions away and tell yourself that you will start the task for 5 minutes straight. Generally, you should find that the 5 minutes is enough to motivate you to continue, but if it doesn’t, then you may want to consider re-evaluating what’s important to you or what’s really keeping you from starting.

A studying strategy, I personally adopt is I sleep/nap when my brain is not able to think or process information. For instance, not being able to process information while reading textbook or too stressed doing questions. If it’s the case that you are sleepy or too tired, I would suggest taking a nap/sleep.

Much of our cognitive processes including ability to process information at the sensory level requires brain energy. If you are too tired, you might not be able to focus on what you are reading (because your eyes are constantly trying to close).
